A Guide to Moving Interstate or Intercity

Are you thinking about, or have you already made the decision to move to another city? Possibly in another state? Here are some tips to help make the big move go as smoothly as possible.

When looking for a new house or apartment, make sure there is enough room for all your furnishings.

Once you have found your new home, you need to book an experienced and trusted interstate or intercity removalist company.

Book your removalist company as far in advance as possible.

When will your furniture arrive? There's a good chance you will be at your new house a day or two before your belongings, so arrange some temporary bedding if need be, or shout yourself to a hotel for the night.

Do you need to arrange secure storage for your possessions? Either in the new city or the one you have just moved from? There are plenty of options for both long term and short term leases for storage units.

Keep a folder of any paper work and documents involved with your inter-state move. Lease agreements, house and storage, names and phone numbers for real estate agents, new keys, insurance documents, any other paperwork such as invoices for any payments made involving your move. Keep it with you during the move should the need arise to refer to them or to use reference numbers etc

Do you require any of your possessions to be professionally packed? Maybe you have some antique furniture or valuable art works, or items that may require more specialist attention such as a pool table. If you do need a professional packing service, make sure you also book this well in advance.

Don't forget to arrange amenities and utilities like power, water, phone and internet services. These can often take up to 2 weeks for a technician to come and set things up, so again, get your booking in a good 2 weeks before you are due to arrive.

Don't leave your packing to the last minute. If you can, start packing as soon as you have set your moving date, a good month is a good time frame to start packing if you have moving inter-state or to a new city. There is a lot to organise, so packing a few boxes each day is a good idea. If you feel you don't have the time, you can hire a professional packing service to do the job for you.

It's also a good time to de-clutter your house. Donate any unwanted items to a charity or think about holding a garage sale.

We hope this guide has been useful in planning your interstate move. Good luck and best wishes.
